Breaking through the "silent wall", they embraced love and dreams

Today is the International Day of the Deaf, the reporter will take you into the silent world of the hearing-impaired

They can't hear the sounds around them or speak clear language, but such a group of hearing-impaired people have broken through the barriers of the silent world, embraced a wonderful life, and made a breakthrough in their respective fields.

September 25, 2022 is the 65th "International Deaf Day", let us listen to their dreams and wishes together... Yangzi Evening News/Ziniu News reporter Liu Mengxue

Become entrepreneurial partners with JianTing people, and take graduation photos all over the Nanjing campus

Character: Yuan Jing Age: 42 years old

  Occupation: Children's photographer

Dream: Repay the society with skills, lead more deaf children to fall in love with photography, and support themselves

Wearing a loose T-shirt, outdoor sneakers, and standard outdoor photographer attire, Yuan Jing appeared at the agreed interview location.

In order to better engage in his favorite photography career, in August 2013, Yuan Jing quit his stable job for 8 years and opened his first studio "Kongkong Children's Photography Studio".

Although he was mentally prepared to challenge difficulties in advance, the actual difficulty was beyond his imagination: lack of interpersonal communication, limited social relations, unfamiliarity with the photography process, lack of funds, etc... Yuan Jing felt a lot of pressure.

The studio was losing money every year for the first three years.

There was no way out, Yuan Jing, who refused to admit defeat, went forward without turning back.

He started filming with friends around him, and slowly accumulated the first batch of customers.

He also started from his children's school. With the high cost performance and word-of-mouth recommendation, he took the initiative to find more and more orders for campus ID photos and graduation photos.

At this time, Yuan Jing still deeply felt that hearing impairment was a wall that was difficult for him to overcome.

The turnaround came in 2017, the fourth year of his business.

That year, Yuan Jing met Du Peng, who also loves photography.

The two like-minded people soon formed a partnership and became partners.

Du Peng became his "ear" and "mouth".

With the help of his partners, Yuan Jing's studio finally broke even that year.

In 2020, Yuan Jing won the title of "Provincial Self-improvement Model", and he also won the first place in the 2022 Nanjing Disabled Persons' Vocational Skills Competition Photography Art Creation Competition.

After nearly 20 years of hard work, Yuan Jing knows the importance of skills for the employment of hearing-impaired people, so he began to walk into the campus to teach photography knowledge to the hearing-impaired students.

He also offers studio internships every May and June.

Yuan Jing guides the students to practice on-site shooting, helps them acquire a skill, and lays the foundation for self-reliance, self-reliance and self-improvement.

He is the handsome and sunny brother in the hearts of colleagues, and he is also a master of graphic design.

Character: Zhang Cong Age: 34 years old

  Occupation: Web Designer

Wish: The software adds text-to-speech function to allow colleagues to hear the design concept

On the afternoon of the meeting with the reporter, Zhang Cong arrived 20 minutes early.

Clean casual dress, the blue shirt makes him more sunny and handsome.

It has been 5 years since he joined the current company. Zhang Cong has integrated into the team, exerted his expertise, and created value for the enterprise. He has won the Hard Service Award, Design Contribution Award, and Best Newcomer Award for many times.

The atmosphere of Zhang Cong's team is active, and the acceptance and tolerance given by colleagues make Zhang Cong feel friendly and enthusiastic every day in the silent world.

Colleagues also affectionately call him "little brother".

Zhang Cong's ability to obtain today's job opportunities is inseparable from the professional skills he learned in school and the pre-match training for each competition.

He majored in computer science at Tianjin University of Technology's School of Deafness and Artificial Intelligence, and studied art by himself.

After graduation, Zhang Cong was recommended by the Disabled Persons' Federation to participate in technical competitions such as photography and poster design at all levels across the country, and won a number of first prizes.

Excellent professional performance and excellent professional skills make Zhang Cong handy in his own post.

At present, Zhang Cong is mainly engaged in the company's web design, poster production, and simulated plant photography.

The company's main business is the export of simulated plants, and the graphic design should focus on key words such as environmental protection, health, positivity, simplicity, and beauty.

Four years ago, according to these requirements, Zhang Cong took the lead and worked with his colleagues to produce the album standard. Today, the company's album is still designed according to this standard.

Each business department of the company is responsible for customers from different countries and regions. Overseas customers have different aesthetics, and the business department has a better understanding of their own customers' preferences. Zhang Cong usually cooperates with the requirements of the business department to design and modify posters. Sometimes Several options will also be prepared.

Since his poster design has been recognized by different customers, he has also assisted multiple business departments in negotiating orders, and colleagues are very willing to cooperate with him.

The "hard service award" was awarded to Zhang Cong based on the positive feedback from the business department.

"Two-way running" lights up the silent world with love

  Character: Yu Xiaolan

  Age: 42

Occupation: Language teacher in a deaf school

Teacher Yu Xiaolan of Nanjing School for the Deaf was invited as a sign language interpreter and supported the face-to-face interview for 4 hours.

The silent world and the sound world can be freely integrated, and Yu Xiaolan's smile and gestures naturally exude warmth.

"Before college, Yuan Jing and Zhang Cong attended Nanjing School for the Deaf. Although I have not taught them, I have heard the inspirational stories of these two star students. They are the pride of teachers." Yu Xiaolan affirmed Yuan Jing and Zhang Cong's willingness to actively integrate into the society, and believed that this was the key to their ability to stand on their own feet.

At the same time, Yu Xiaolan believes that the two are also lucky to have a hearing partner who is willing to join hands with them.

This kind of two-way running makes the silent world light.

"Like ordinary students, hearing-impaired students are full of curiosity and eager to be recognized. Due to the lack of information sources and objective communication barriers, their dispositions tend to be purer and kinder. Once they accept a friend, the trust they give to the other party is also extremely high. It's beyond imagination." Yu Xiaolan led us further into the silent world.

During the conversation between Yuan Jing, Zhang Cong, Yu Xiaolan and the reporter, Yu Xiaolan always kept his mouth and hands in sync, and even when he was talking with reporters, he did not forget to use sign language.

"The hearing-impaired people are eager to know the content of the conversation. Therefore, a small detail of respecting them is to let them know what we are talking about in time and avoid guessing." Yu Xiaolan said that the conversation between the hearing teachers will be synchronized with sign language. Movement, which has become a habit of deaf school teachers consciously abide by.

Over the years, when deaf children get married, they will invite teacher Yu Xiaolan to the wedding to witness their growth.

Yu Xiaolan is also happy to act as an interpreter at the wedding scene to build a bridge between the guests and the newlyweds, and convey blessings and thanks.

  ■Interview notes

Understand, accept, support them Hearing people can do more

It is impossible to talk to the driver when using an online car-hailing service. You can only ask passersby for help and inform the driver of your location; if you are sick, you need family members or friends to accompany you, otherwise it will be difficult to communicate with the doctor. Time, you have to re-queue the number... Through face-to-face interviews and many days of text exchanges, the two deaf friends confided to the reporter about the troubles that still exist in the silent world.

At present, the hearing impaired can master sign language, writing, character recognition and lip reading through training, and have been working hard to integrate into the world of hearing people.

We in the audio world should also respond positively to better understand, accept, and support deaf people to integrate into the big family of society!

As hearing people, we can slow down the speech rate and avoid noise interference when communicating with the hearing-impaired people who have spoken conversations to help them hear more clearly.

Sign language is especially important for deaf people who are completely inaudible.

Listening people can learn some simple gestures, and then communicate with words.

Hearing people can communicate more face-to-face with deaf people and let them see expressions, which can avoid many misunderstandings.

Enterprises and institutions that arrange employment for the deaf should better allow a small number of hearing employees to learn common sign languages to improve work efficiency, and can arrange staff who are good at communication to help deaf employees better integrate.

In order to promote barrier-free communication, it is obviously unrealistic to require all hearing people to learn sign language.

We suggest that the relevant government departments should take the lead to establish a professional sign language interpretation service team to provide sign language interpretation support for the deaf when needed, so as to effectively remove the barrier of barrier-free communication.
