Iran is not seeking to acquire nuclear weapons, its President Ebrahim Raisi said on Wednesday, September 21 at the UN General Assembly, while negotiations on the agreement on Tehran's nuclear program are at an impasse.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran does not seek to build or obtain nuclear weapons and such weapons have no place in our doctrine,” assured the Iranian president.

“We will not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons”, reacted, later, the president of the United States, Joe Biden, at the podium of the General Assembly.

France, Germany and the UK – which were parties to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal with the US, Russia and China – are awaiting a formal response from Tehran to the latest terms they agreed. proposed to revive this text from which the American president at the time, Donald Trump, had withdrawn in 2018.

But the Iranian president said he doubted the sincerity of the American government of Joe Biden to revive the agreement.

Towards a revival of the agreement? 

"They keep repeating the same stories from the past, which makes us doubt their commitment to return to the agreement," said Ebrahim Raïsi.

"Can we really believe in this (American) commitment without guarantees and assurances?" Asked the Iranian president again.

Ebrahim Raïssi had met Tuesday in New York with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron to whom he had "expressed his concern" on the file of "guarantees", in particular so that the agreement is preserved regardless of the administration in power in the States.
