Life has almost disappeared from the pond of La Chèze.

In this town near Loudéac (Côtes-d'Armor), thousands of fish were found dead in early September, reports Ouest France.

The inhabitants of the 4-hectare water point were probably victims of the historic drought that affected France this year.

The proliferation of phytoplankton, which caused a drop in available oxygen, would also be involved.

An “ecological disaster” according to the mayor

The level of the pond had thus fallen to reach a historically low level.

On the night of September 7-8, the water changed color and the algae died.

The small fish died first, followed by the medium-sized ones and finally the large ones.

Alerted, the mayor of La Chèze, Gwénola Hollebecq, described the event as an "ecological disaster" and organized an emergency meeting with local fishermen on Thursday.

Authorities are hoping the remaining fish will be able to reproduce and repopulate the pond.

Fishing has been prohibited until further notice to preserve wildlife.
