Forty minutes.
That's how long it took to put an end to the idea of a
Forrest Gump 2
.
Tom Hanks, who played the character in the cult film, shared what happened when he discussed the project with the producers and crew of the first film, released in 1994.
“I have to say that at one point we tried to talk about another
Forrest Gump
, but it only lasted 40 minutes.
And then we never… We were like, 'Guys, come on, it's okay,'” he explained to the
Happy Sad Confused
podcast .
no good reason
It must be said that the opportunity was too good to go back to the world of Forrest Gump.
A year after the theatrical release of the first adaptation of his work, the author Winston Groom, who had written the book on which Robert Zemeckis had relied, had published a sequel, which recounted the ever more incredible adventures of Forrest Gump from the 80s.
But Tom Hanks would not have agreed to take over the role on the basis of a script anyway.
He wanted "a good reason" to do so.
“One smart thing I did is I never signed a contract that had a contractual obligation for a sequel.
I always said, "Guys, if there's a reason to do it, let's do it. But you can't force me."
There's this natural, purely commercial inclination that says, 'Hey, you just had a hit, so do it again and you'll have a hit,'" he added.
Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis are however meeting for a new film:
Pinocchio
, which is released on Disney+ this Thursday!
