• In Arzon, the mayor received a letter from a vacationer complaining about the sound of the village church bells and asking that they be turned off in the morning.

  • The mayor wanted to publicize the request to stop the bells to denounce the behavior of these holidaymakers.

  • Very touristy, the town of Morbihan is dotted with second homes occupied during the holidays.

They are called Hope, Faith and Charity.

This summer as for hundreds of years, the three bells of the church of Arzon (Morbihan) rang every hour and even more.

Early in the morning, Notre-Dame de l'Assomption makes its metal resound seven times from 7 a.m. each morning with a punctuality envied by the SNCF.

And starts again every hour of the day.

An ancestral tradition which is obviously not to the taste of a holidaymaker.

A few days ago, the owner of a second home in the town closing the Gulf of Morbihan wrote to the mayor to complain.

And even ask for the extinction of the bells "from this day".

When he received the letter, Roland Tabart admits "having burst out laughing" in the company of the director of his services.

Signed by a vacationer from the rue du Croisty who goes down to the port of Crouesty (beware of the confusion), the missive is clear.

"The operation of the bells makes life very unpleasant" for this family on vacation in the small town.

The father therefore wrote to the mayor asking him to cut them, on the grounds that his wife and children are "unnecessarily awake in the morning".

His request?

Let them cut the whistle “until 9 a.m. or even 10 a.m.” or even “turn them off completely” so that he and his family “can quietly enjoy this holiday period”.

The mayor of Arzon still can't believe it.

Rather than respond to the sender, Roland Tabart shared the mail with our colleagues from

Ouest-France

, who were happy to share it.

"I didn't want to show anyone.

Just show the absurdity of such a request, ”explains the unlabeled mayor.

The latter contacted the rector of Arzon, who wrote him a long note recalling the role of bells in the Catholic religion.

“I'm not angry, I just want to remind you that we can't put a whole section of our history under our feet so that children can sleep.

A character alone should not make law”.

Born in the town in 1946, the mayor worked for a long time in Paris in the pharmaceutical industry before returning to his native village.

He had never seen such a request since his election in Arzon in 2014. Since the publication of the article with our colleagues, the mayor claims to have already received many letters supporting his decision.

“We must learn to live together”

Populated by about 2,300 inhabitants in winter, its charming town welcomes 35,000 to 40,000 visitors every summer.

In recent years, it has become a very popular property where some beautiful houses have sold for more than two million euros.

“We have a gem.

But we have to learn to live there together”.

And as long as he is mayor, life will be punctuated by the sound of his church bells.
