Should Twitter be regulated regarding access to pornography?

About sixty associations for the defense of children have just seized Arcom, the media regulator, to intervene with the social network in order to prevent minors from accessing, via this social network, pornographic content, we learned on Tuesday from one of the promoters of this initiative.

"We obviously do not want Twitter to be blocked, which remains a platform with rich and varied content, but we simply ask it to comply with the texts in force for the protection of children," Thomas Rohmer told AFP. , founder of Open (Observatory of parenthood and digital education).

Questioned by AFP, Arcom confirmed having received this letter, sent by Open, the National Union of Family Associations (Unaf) and the French Council of Associations for the Rights of the Child (Cofrade, which brings together more than 50 associations).

“We are very attentive to this referral and we are going to investigate this case,” said a spokesperson from the former CSA.

Sometimes Prohibited Content

There is a lot of pornographic content on Twitter, some of which is particularly violent towards women, said Thomas Rohmer.

In addition, on this platform "we can fall into even darker abysses, with child pornography or zoophilia, totally prohibited content", he added.

In theory, users under the age of 13 cannot open an account on Twitter, and between 13 and 15 years old they need their parents' authorization, but in reality these restrictions are too easily circumvented.

To remedy this, "it is up to the platforms and the public authorities to find technical solutions", maintains the activist.

Contacted by the associations in July, the management of Twitter France sent them back to its European headquarters in Ireland.

“We have decided to take the next step by grabbing the Arcom: we hope that this time it will make them react.

We would like everyone to be able to sit around a table and look for solutions”, underlined Thomas Rohmer.
