New Yorker

HuffPost

.

In this watercolor, the artist who died on August 11 at the age of 89 represented a woman on a bicycle, a guitar in the back, walking between New York skyscrapers.

This drawing, which is the 114th and last made for the

New Yorker

, is titled "Morning Music".

Fascinated by New York and the United States

Joined the

New Yorker

in 1970, the author of

Petit Nicolas

signed his first cover for the magazine in 1978. Despite his prolific activity, Sempé remains only the second most present cartoonist in the publication.

It was indeed Arthur Getz who illustrated the most covers of The

New Yorker

, with a record 212 drawings.

Fascinated by the United States and by New York in particular, Sempé devoted his last album,

Sempé in America

, to this country which fascinated him so much.

“I like the colors of New York.

They are alive: yellow, green, red and bright blue,” the designer once said.

“Paris, where I live, is beautiful, but it is always gray there.

I like Paris too, but it's not the same thing.
