A woman was found buried in a boat 800 years ago in Argentina

A team of researchers affiliated with multiple institutions in Chile and Argentina has found "the remains of a woman buried in a boat about 800 years ago", the first evidence of such a burial, to be found in the Argentine "Patagonia".

In its research paper published the day before yesterday in the journal "PLOS ONE", the research group described its study of these remains, which were found at a drilling site called "Newen Antig", near Lake Lacar in the western part of Argentina.

An analysis by the researchers showed that “the woman was between 17 and 25 years old at the time of her death,” but the researchers “were unable to determine the cause of death,” and they also found “a jug placed near her head, and it was surrounded by nearly 600 pieces of wood from a Chilean cedar tree.” One, and there were also signs that the wood had been burnt,” according to the research paper.

The wooden boats of that time, known as "wambo", were hollowed out using fire, and the test of the woman's bone fragments showed that it dates back to about 1142 AD, which means that she was most likely from the Mapuche people, and that she lived and died before the arrival of the Spaniards to Argentina .
