The Minister of Education, Pap Ndiaye, said on Tuesday that he was "confident that the start of the new school year will go as well as possible" in schools, colleges and high schools, despite an unprecedented crisis in the recruitment of teachers, which led Education national to hire many contractors.

“There are structural difficulties linked to the attractiveness of the profession, but at this stage we are confident that the start of the new school year will go as well as possible for the students of the Créteil academy, and beyond of course for all of the territory", declared the minister during a trip to the rectorate of Créteil (south-east of Paris).

A back-to-school unit set up to respond to requests

The Minister met with the members of the back-to-school unit set up to best meet the demands of schools and establishments in terms of staff in this academy - which brings together Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne and Seine-et-Marne, particularly affected by recruitment difficulties.

In this academy, "at this stage, the situation is comparable, even slightly better than last year at the same time", according to Pap Ndiaye.

But "there are difficulties in certain disciplines" of secondary school, in particular for vocational high schools, and "we are working on it".

This year, more than 4,000 positions have not been filled in the teacher competitions (primary and secondary), a historically low rate, according to figures from the ministry, raising fears of a back-to-school under tension.

Controversial “job-dating” to recruit contract workers

But the minister promised that there would be "a teacher in front of each class in all schools in France" at the start of the school year.

Faced with these recruitment difficulties, the National Education has in particular resorted to recruiting contract workers from June during controversial "job-dating", interviews organized in several academies.

"It is true that we use a proportion of contract teachers which is significant, particularly in this academy, because of the educational needs that we have here", declared Pap Ndiaye.

Improve “the attractiveness of the teaching profession”

“We must respond to this by improving the attractiveness of the teaching profession.

These are structural measures that we are going to take in the months to come.

In the meantime, we are recruiting as best we can.”

The rector of the Créteil academy, Daniel Auverlot, assures us "to have no worries for the start of the school year".

“In the first degree, we have retained 700 contract workers who already existed, and we are completing the recruitment of around 200 additional contract workers,” he said.

“In secondary education, we have already recruited and retained 1,400 contract workers”.

In the first degree (nursery and elementary schools), barely more than 900 candidates were recruited in the teacher competitions in the Créteil academy, out of 1,665 open positions.
