Who are the characters ?

Viserys I (Paddy Considine) is the fifth king of the Targaryen dynasty.

His estate pits his designated heiress, his eldest daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) from a first marriage, against his son Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), born from his second marriage to Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke).

Why does the second challenge the ability of the first to succeed their father?

The pretext is as old as the world: because it's a woman, of course.

The family is further weakened by the fact that another woman, the king's cousin, Rhaenys (Eve Best) had twice been denied the throne because of her gender.
