A 54-year-old woman was stabbed to death on Sunday at her home in Le Lamentin in central Martinique, and a suspect was arrested by neighbors and then handed over to police.

The body was discovered by neighbors late Sunday afternoon, who alerted law enforcement, firefighters said.

These neighbors also neutralized and tied up a suspect, present at the time of the discovery of the body, pending the arrival of the police and gendarmes.

This 54-year-old man was then taken into custody as part of a flagrance investigation.

A link to be established between the suspect and the victim

When the firefighters arrived, the victim's body had numerous stab wounds, probably caused by a cutlass, a machete traditionally used on the island to cut sugar cane.

According to the prosecution, the suspect is not the victim's companion, but their link remains to be determined.

This is the first murder of a woman in Martinique out of the 19 homicides committed on the territory since the beginning of the year, confirmed the public prosecutor.

No policies against violence against women, denounce the associations

Local feminist associations immediately reacted to the crime.

“Faced with the increase in violence [in Martinique], what role does violence against women play in our policy proposals?

None !

“, regrets the UFM, the union of women of Martinique, in a press release.

"This is the first feminicide since the beginning of the year, but there are all these women that we receive every day who are killed slowly, psychologically, morally," said Georges Arnaud, the co-founder of the Culture Equality association.
