The dark hours seem far behind the court of the Sun King.

The Palace of Versailles (Yvelines) recently posted encouraging figures in terms of tourist attendance, reports Le Parisien, Sunday.

In July 2022, the management of the iconic monument said it had registered 825,000 visitors, compared to 446,000 in July 2021.

“Encouraging” figures

"These figures are encouraging, but we must remain cautious due to the geopolitical context due to the war in Ukraine and because we have not emerged from the Covid-19 crisis", comments the director of cultural development.

In addition, 26% of tourists who come to visit the Palace of Versailles come from France and 18% from the United States.

This year, the big absentees are the Russians, due to the war in Ukraine, and the Chinese, still subject to numerous health restrictions.

The residence of the kings of France is therefore not close to regaining its record score of 8.2 million visitors in 2019 (+ 30% compared to 2022).
