With technology continuing to influence all aspects of our lives, and the ways we access and obtain information drastically changing at all times, a recurring question arises about the importance of libraries in the information age, why do libraries exist?

Can it continue to develop humanity with information and provide it with sources of inspiration, as it did in the past?

Since the dawn of history and the first libraries witnessed by the Babylonian and Sumerian civilizations, libraries have played a central role in providing rare, unique and valuable scientific information, and the principle of the library was crystallized in the United Arab Emirates in 1925, when the late Sheikh Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, opened from 1924 Until 1951, a private library in the Sharjah Fort.

And that private library developed into the “Sharjah Public Library,” which is nearly 100 years old, and is about to start its second century within a few years. On the need of members of society to explore knowledge, information, science and culture through its rich and diverse sources.

Although it was founded at a time when access to information was difficult, it has continued to thrive in an era of great technological changes, and has proven that flexibility, adaptability, and abundance of resources and information help libraries continue to promote education and professional development, and provide services that go beyond mere lending. Books, and although digital educational tools have become important and indispensable tools in the modern era, libraries provide tangible and intangible benefits to society, and enable it to keep pace with contemporary society.
