Xinhua News Agency, Shanghai, August 15th (Reporter Dong Xue) Walking on the Suzhou River, occasionally one or two fish can be seen floating on the river with their belly turned upside down, and the cleaners take a boat to salvage them.

"We have salvaged this intensively. Often times, dead fish appear in pieces, and the weight of the fish is several tons a day." Zhang Haibo, a staff member in charge of cleaning the Suzhou River, said.

The reporter learned from the Shanghai City Appearance and Environmental Sanitation Water Management Office that since the beginning of this year, the Suzhou River Management Station has received reports from citizens of 13 incidents of large-scale dead fish in the Suzhou River, which is far more than in previous years.

Moreover, these fish are not wild, and are mostly released by citizens.

According to Cai Haifeng, deputy head of the Moganshan branch of Suzhou River Management Station, after the 42-kilometer coastline in the central urban area of Suzhou River was basically completed by the end of 2020, citizens' release activities became more frequent, and some people released animals on a large scale during large-scale festivals. There are also people who come to release their lives in the middle school and college entrance examinations.

On the whole, there is a trend of increasing release quantity and specialization of release tools.

The areas where dead fish are concentrated have two characteristics: one is a dense residential area, and the other is a location close to a hydrophilic platform that is convenient for release.

"Most of the fish released by the public are bought from the market. These artificially farmed fish are not easy to adapt to the water of Suzhou River." Cai Haifeng said.

Cai Haifeng said that once, the Suzhou River became a "black and smelly river" for passers-by to cover their noses due to pollution.

Today, the Suzhou River has finally become clear after a long-term treatment, but the fish that its water quality can currently carry is still very limited.

Especially in the case of continuous high temperature and heavy rain in Shanghai this summer, the water quality will deteriorate in a short period of time, and the oxygen content will further decrease. It is difficult for the fish released by the public to survive.

In addition, unscientific release has also led to problems such as fishing and fishing.

"Some people stand on the flood control wall to fish with nets, which is a safety hazard, and some people sit on the green belt along the river to fish. In addition to destroying the lawn, some household garbage will be left behind." Zhang Haibo said.

The reporter saw some propaganda boards by the Suzhou River to persuade citizens to release animals scientifically.

At present, the Shanghai City Appearance and Environmental Sanitation Water Management Office on the one hand strengthens water surface inspections and operation supervision, and strengthens emergency response to sudden pollution; on the other hand, it strengthens publicity and persuasion, and calls on citizens not to release animals in Suzhou River.
