Iran 'categorically' denies any link to aggression and blames Salman Rushdie

Iran, after three days of silence, Monday "categorically" denied any involvement in the stabbing attack in the United States against Salman Rushdie, blaming the author of the "Satanic Verses", 33 years old after Ayatollah Khomeini's fatwa condemning the writer to death.

"We categorically deny" any link between the aggressor and Iran, and "no one has the right to accuse the Islamic Republic of Iran", said Nasser Kanani, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in his weekly press conference.

"In this attack, only Salman Rushdie and his supporters deserve to be blamed and even condemned," said the Iranian spokesman.

Thousands of pilgrims celebrate the Assumption in Lourdes

Thousands of pilgrims of all ages and origins took part on Sunday, on the eve of a Mass of the Assumption, in a torchlight procession to the glory of the Virgin Mary at the Catholic sanctuary of Lourdes, where 1.6 million faithful are expected this year.

Some 15,000 people, according to the direction of the sanctuary, marched Sunday, shortly after dark, torch in hand, behind a white statue of the Virgin Mary, singing and reciting many times "Hail Mary".

This Monday, a mass of the Assumption must take place.

The crowd was preceded by hundreds of sick people in wheelchairs.

Health restrictions have greatly reduced the number of pilgrims coming to Lourdes since 2020.

Palestinian killed in Israeli raid in East Jerusalem

A Palestinian was killed on Monday after trying, according to Israeli police, to stab security forces who were carrying out an operation in a neighborhood of East Jerusalem, an area occupied and annexed by Israel.

Mohammed Shaham, a 21-year-old Palestinian, was shot in the head at close range by Israeli forces at his family home, his father Ibrahim said, according to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Police said they launched an operation overnight to locate weapons in Kafr Aqab, an East Jerusalem neighborhood behind Israel's "security fence" and bordering the West Bank city of Ramallah.

“A suspect who attempted to stab our fighters has been neutralized,” police said in a statement, adding that he succumbed to his injuries in a military hospital.

Air link restored between the Cook Islands and Tahiti

An air link between the Cook Islands and Tahiti was restored this weekend, after almost two years of isolation for the small English-speaking archipelago in the Pacific, and should facilitate the arrival of tourists from the northern hemisphere.

The Air Rarotonga airline operated its first flight between Tahiti and Avarua, the capital of this Oceanian archipelago, on Saturday (Sunday in Paris) after almost two years of stoppage for health reasons, hoping that this link will make it possible to conquer new tourist markets in Europe and North America, noted an AFP journalist.

Already at the beginning of the year, air rotations had resumed between the Cook Islands, populated by less than 15,000 inhabitants, and New Zealand, located 3,000 km further south, and the main outbound market: 76% of 172,000 tourists from the Cook Islands were kiwi fruit in 2019.

Crowned world champion three weeks ago in Eugene (United States), Kevin Mayer abandoned the decathlon in the first event, the 100m, at the European Athletics Championships, this Monday in Munich (Germany).

Kevin Mayer (30) cut his effort around 70 meters.

Then he waved to the public at the Olympic Stadium in Munich and explained a few moments later that he "stopped before he injured himself".
