China News Agency reporter Zhang Tianfu

After taking the lead in piloting and formally establishing Sanjiangyuan National Park in China, Qilian Mountain and Qinghai Lake National Park were created... Qinghai Province, located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, can be called China's "National Park Province".

A reporter from China News Agency visited Qilian Mountains and Qinghai Lake successively to see how to protect the flagship species "King of Snow Mountains" snow leopard and "Giant Panda running on the plateau" Przewalski's gazelle.

Giant panda expert "cross-border" chasing snow leopard

The Qilian Mountains, located at the junction of Qinghai and Gansu provinces, are about 1,200 kilometers long.

Here, researchers have photographed five snow leopards in the same frame, which is rare in the world and the first in China.

"At the end of the 20th century, I followed my teacher to follow more than a dozen giant pandas," said Wang Dajun, an animal expert at Peking University's School of Life Sciences. "Being with wild animals every day is a particularly attractive thing."

From giant pandas "cross-border" to snow leopards, starting from 2021, Wang Dajun's team has been authorized to successfully capture three snow leopards in the temperature of minus 20 to 30 degrees in Qilian Mountain. "We hope to have more knowledge about it, which will help Protect."

"I saw one of them that was caught and thought it was too small. I was afraid that the tracker it was wearing would affect its survival, so I was ready to let it go. But when it jumped out of the cage, I knew I made a mistake." Wang Dajun smiled wryly, "shrinking in The snow leopard in the cage, jump out, it's a big guy."

After the online registration, the other two snow leopards that were successfully released were nicknamed "Qi Ji" and "Qi Miao".

"I always want to see the snow leopard we captured to ensure its safety." Wang Dajun introduced that it was the first time he saw a snow leopard after being released, "It stood there, looked back at us, and walked with an elegant gait. Going up the hill. It shows the wildlife adapting and mastering the habitat. It's the master here."

"It observes us much easier than we observe it." Wang Dajun saw the snow leopard showing half of its head on the mountain ridge through the photographic equipment, "Sometimes through positioning, I know that it is very close to me, but I can't see it. Can't get it, but I know it sees me."

"The main villain in (the movie) "Kung Fu Panda" is a snow leopard, but I found that (the public) has a lot of misunderstandings about it." Wang Dajun said, on the contrary, the snow leopard is very elegant, and from China to Central Asia, there has never been a snow leopard attack. Human public records.

Wang Dajun introduced that by tracking snow leopards, the team gained a lot of new knowledge about snow leopards, such as Qinghai Tianjun, Qilian and other counties at the southern foot of the Qilian Mountains in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the transition zone of the Hexi Corridor, the density of snow leopards is quite high, "but our research And the acquaintance has only just begun.”

Protect the last habitat of "Giant Pandas Running on the Plateau"

Like the Przewalski's wild horse, the Przewalski's gazelle was named by Russian naturalist Przewalski.

Przewalski's gazelle was once widely distributed in Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Gansu, Xinjiang, Qinghai and other places, but due to the influence of human activities and habitat deterioration, it is now only distributed in parts of the Qinghai Lake surrounding the lake, and at the beginning of the 20th century, the number was less than 300. Because it is rare and endangered, it is called "the giant panda running on the plateau".

Bandaging for rescue, feeding fodder in winter, and rescuing Przewalski's gazelle trapped by the grassland net fence... Sonan Cairang, a farmer and herdsman in Gangcha County, Haibei Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, is a representative of many local grassroots guardians.

"We live by the Qinghai Lake with Przewalski's gazelle. This is our common homeland. We like it and will protect it, even if there is no salary." Suonan Cairang said.

"With the recovery of the Przewalski's gazelle population, they ate on the pastures of the herdsmen, and the herdsmen made a lot of sacrifices without any complaints." Yan Yinli, deputy director of the Bureau of Natural Resources and Forestry and Grassland of Gangcha County, introduced that the county is home to the Przewalski's gazelle. The most important habitat is the Qinghai Lake Przewalski's Antelope Special Reserve of about 160 square kilometers.

Yan Yinli said that in the special protection area, the local area lowered the height of the net fence, and even gradually removed the net fence to prevent blocking the migratory passage of Przewalski's gazelle, especially in accordance with the drinking habits of wild animals, scientifically set up canals to facilitate the Przewalski's gazelle drinking water and farmers and herdsmen. Irrigation, "Now the Qinghai Lake National Park is being created, and we hope to provide a better living environment for the Przewalski's gazelle."

Today, the once critically endangered Przewalski's gazelle has recovered to about 2,800.
