On August 12, the excavation of the tunnel spillway of the flood discharge system of the Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station, a national key project and a controlled reservoir in the upper reaches of the Dadu River, was completed. This is the world's largest cross-section discharge tunnel currently under construction.

So far, all four caverns of the flood discharge system of Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station have been transferred into high-strength impact-resistant and wear-resistant concrete construction, which has laid a solid foundation for the scheduled completion of the hydropower station.

Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station is located in Malkang City and Jinchuan County, Aba Prefecture, Sichuan.

The spillway of the project's flood discharge system is in the shape of a city gate, with a maximum excavation section of 19.3 meters wide and 27.75 meters high, covering an area of 516 square meters.

According to the design plan, the main tunnel of the flood discharge system - the tunnel-type spillway is the key project to ensure the normal operation of the hydropower station in the event of excessive floods, and it is the last line of defense to ensure the safety of the entire hydropower station.

It is understood that the Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station is a key project of the country's western development and one of the main water intake points for the "South-to-North Water Diversion" project.

After the completion of the Dadu River Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station, the main stream of the Dadu River can increase the electricity during the dry season by 6.6 billion kWh each year, save about 2.96 million tons of standard coal, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 7.18 million tons, and significantly improve the flood control capacity of downstream cities and towns.

The project is expected to store water in early November 2024, and all units will be put into operation in 2026.
