A surprising autumn scene in the hot Paris summer

picture

The carpet of fallen leaves from the trees gives a deceptive autumn character to the paths of the Butte Chaumont public park in eastern Paris, the “green lung” of the French capital, even though it is summer and the temperature reaches 36 degrees Celsius.

Since last July, the trees of the city and other French regions have been witnessing an early autumn, one would imagine that they had overthrown their summer, but the frequent heat waves and the resulting drought are in fact the cause of this unfamiliar scene.

Flying trees and chestnut trees seemed the most urgent to get rid of their leaves, a month earlier than usual.

However, Paris municipal experts are reassured that this amazing phenomenon caused by drought has not yet reached the level of seriousness.

“These trees are not stupid at all, they just resorted to what keeps them alive,” explains Beatrice Rizzo of the greenery department.

Rizzo confirms that these trees that dried up in the summer "can re-grow their leaves" before autumn, if favorable weather conditions are available.

However, the expert is concerned about other diseases that may result from high temperatures, such as “sunburn” that affects the bark of trees and digs wounds in their wood that facilitate the growth of parasites, which threatens the tree in the long run.
