A cotton field planted in a Hollywood school to explain the atrocities of slavery in the past to students shocked an African-American schoolgirl, according to a lawsuit filed in California against the school.

Rashunda Bates, who claims it caused her daughter distress, is seeking $250,000 in damages.

The lawsuit, filed this week against the school, stated that the student "suffers uncontrollable episodes of anxiety and depression when she thinks about the cotton planting project" launched by her school.

The cotton fields in which slaves were forced to work under appalling conditions remain emblematic of this era in US history.
