Wakayama Prefecture announced on the 12th that 1,948 new people were confirmed to be infected with the new coronavirus.
This is 474 more than on the same day of the previous week, making it the second highest number of confirmed cases reported in a single day.
A total of 85,362 people were confirmed to be infected in the prefecture.
A record eight deaths were also announced.
The number of serious cases has increased by three since the 11th, bringing the number to four.
