Grease star Olivia Newton-John was born in the UK but moved to Australia as a child.

On Monday, her husband John Easterling announced that 73-year-old Olivia Newton-John had died at home in California in the United States "surrounded by loved ones".

This after being diagnosed with cancer for the third time.

"Significant contribution to the nation"

State funerals can be awarded to Australians who are considered to have made a significant contribution to the nation.

They are usually given to prime ministers and governors, but artists, actors and athletes can also in some cases receive state funerals.

In addition, major landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and Optus Stadium have been lit up pink in recent days in memory of the actor and her commitment to cancer issues.

This weekend it was also announced that Australian singer Judith Durham will also receive a state funeral in Victoria.

Role model from Australian actors

Other Australian stars, such as actor Rebel Wilson, have also spoken out about Newton-John's importance to Australia in a post on Instagram:

“Seeing you in a big Hollywood movie like Grease, with your natural dialect, was crucial for me as a child.

It helped me believe that an 'Aussie' girl can star in big international musicals," writes Wilson in a post on Instagram.
