In 12 days, it will be 37 years since the JAL jumbo plane crash that killed 520 people.

In Ueno Village, Gunma Prefecture, where the crash site is located, a memorial mountain climb will be held for the bereaved families and related parties.

On August 12, 1985, a jumbo jet of Japan Airlines carrying passengers returning to their hometown during the Obon period crashed into the mountains of Ueno Village, killing 520 people, the highest number of any aircraft accident in Japan.

Every year, on August 12th, many people, including the general public, climb a mountain to commemorate the spirits of Osutaka Ridge, the site of the crash. Next, we will limit those who can climb this year to bereaved families and related parties.

On the 11th, lanterns with messages written for the victims were lined up along the river in front of the Ueno village office, and bereaved families who visited prayed with their hands together.

On the 12th, after the memorial climbing, a memorial service will be held from 6:00 pm at the "Memorial Garden" at the foot of the mountain. About 20 people will observe a moment of silence at 6:56 p.m. when the accident occurred.

Thirty-seven years have passed since the accident, and as the bereaved families continue to age, it will be a memorial day to mourn the victims and convey the memories and lessons of the accident.
