As part of the celebration of its fifth anniversary, the Louvre Abu Dhabi announced that it will host the most comprehensive impressionist exhibition in the region, “Impressionism: On the Path of Modernity”, organized in partnership with the Musée d’Orsay and the Foundation Museums France, in cooperation with many leading French institutions.

This exhibition, scheduled to be launched from October 12 to February 5, 2023, is one of the most important exhibitions devoted to highlighting impressionism in the region. It will also shed light on the new world that emerged from the mid-1950s until the end of the same century, while highlighting creativity. The exceptional nature of the artists at the time, which was manifested in their response to periods of profound social and economic changes.

Exceptional pieces

The exhibition includes more than 100 paintings, 40 artworks, drawn and printed, 20 photographs, five dresses attributed to this era, as well as a contemporary installation, and is primarily inspired by the impressionist collection of the Musée d’Orsay, the first of its kind in the world. The Musée d'Orsay is on loan for the first time in the region with these exceptional pieces of art, in celebration of the five-year anniversary of the establishment of Louvre Abu Dhabi.

The artworks that will be included in the exhibition are also from the Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Collection, in addition to a group of holdings provided by prominent French institutions such as: the French National Library, the Museum of Decorative Arts, and the Louvre Paris.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi will also reveal for the first time in the exhibition the most prominent possessions that it recently acquired, which is the "Chocolate Cup" by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1877-1878).

pivotal event

Louvre Abu Dhabi Director, Manuel Rabaté, said: “Impressionism: On the Path of Modernity is a pivotal event in the museum’s journey as we prepare to celebrate its fifth anniversary in November this year, continuing our unwavering commitment to global exhibitions. The style gives visitors first-hand knowledge of artistic history, and exhibiting the works of the most prominent pioneers of this movement in the 19th century in Abu Dhabi is a cultural and aesthetic achievement that presents a golden opportunity for the entire region to learn about this movement far from its Parisian origins.

This daring adventure 150 years ago added new languages and visual styles to art, and today it puts in our hands the means to question and understand the peculiarities of our contemporary world.”

15 sections

The exhibition includes 15 sections arranged on a chronological and thematic basis. It also highlights, respectively, the role of Monet, descriptions of contemporary life, rural society, and signs of Impressionism. Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Morezzo, Pissarro and Sisley are at the center of this exhibition, as they enter into a dialogue with the works of painters of the previous generation such as Manet, as well as the proponents of the realist scene in the 1850s (Courbet, Rousseau, Corot) or the so-called academic artists.

The exhibition “Impressionism on the Path of Modernity” highlights the boundary, or rather the extent of fluctuation, that quickly emerged between the sides of this artistic movement, or between the call to adopt the modern method and the desire to glorify nature alone.

wonderfull collection

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to share this remarkable collection of exceptional artworks with a new audience, by launching an exhibition,” said Sylvie Petrie, Museum Chief Curator, Deputy Director of Collections and Trustee Affairs, and Stéphane Guegan, Scientific Adviser to the President of the Musée d’Orsay and Musée de la Orangerie. This exhibition will take visitors on a tour of one of the greatest periods of history, stretching from the mid-1850s until the end of the same century.

During this period, the Industrial Revolution radically reshaped the look of the world and the nature of social relations.

The Impressionists were also able to translate this rapid societal change on canvases, by adopting a fast and mysterious style of painting.

The artists whose works appeared in the Louvre Abu Dhabi exhibition provide us with a window through which we look at this unique historical moment when borders seemed to be expanding, while reality was no longer stable and interconnected, but rather became fragmented and subject to a set of interpretations and perceptions.
