The film Band of Seven was co-created by seven well-known Hong Kong directors, Sammo Hung, Hui Anhua, Tam Ka Ming, Yuan Heping, Johnnie To, Lin Lingdong and Tsui Hark.

From the 1950s to 2020, with ten years as an era, each director draws lots to claim an era, and use film to look back at the golden years of Hong Kong since 1950.

It is a propositional composition, but it does not limit the play.

The seven units received different responses, but Du Qifeng's "Golden Everywhere" won the affirmation of most audiences.

The three small townspeople always have the dream of getting rich overnight, but they always miss the opportunity to develop.

Exquisite story structure and classic Johnnie To-style fate theory endow this short film with depth and visibility.

To Qifeng's production has decreased in recent years, and "Golden Everywhere" has made fans even more expecting To Qifeng to go out to the mountains as soon as possible before directing a feature film.

In an interview with a reporter from the Yangcheng Evening News, he promised: "I will definitely plan my own directorial works. As long as I can shoot, I will definitely continue to shoot."

"Everywhere Gold" comes from personal experience, it really "lost a lot of money"

To Qifeng's draw was in the 2000s.

Many people's memories of Hong Kong in the 2000s may be symbolic events such as the "SARS" epidemic and the opening of independent travel in Hong Kong and Macau, but John To chose finance as the theme of the story.

The three characters in the film often gather in the cafeteria to discuss investment plans, witnessing three important events: IT fever, the economic downturn brought about by SARS, and the eve of the launch of the Hong Kong stock market through train.

Du Qifeng said with a smile that the inspiration for the story came from personal experience: "I experienced two financial crises from 2000 to 2010, and I also lost a lot of money during this period."

It is undeniable that finance and investment are the daily life of Hong Kong citizens, which also gives "Golden Everywhere" a very strong "Hong Kong flavor".

To Qifeng said: "Everyone knows that Hong Kong is a city with a relatively single economy. I experienced financial ups and downs more than three times during my growth. Every time the economic downturn will make some people go bankrupt, it seems that many people are controlled by the times. ."

"Golden Everywhere" is led by three new actors, Xu Haochang, Hu Tong and Wu Yongshi, and the story is advanced by the dialogue of the three characters.

To Qifeng said that the three characters were designed to express a sense of the impermanence of fate.

The characters and functions of the three people are very distinct: Xu Haochang is in charge of instigation, Hu Tong is in charge of analysis, and Wu Yongshi is in charge of prudence.

"For example, during the 'SARS' period, the house price fell to the bottom, and they did not dare to buy because of fear. Who knows that the price will rise to a sky high later; "

The original title of the film was "Eight and a Half", I didn't think how many directors would participate

In "The Band of Seven", To Qifeng has many roles: he is not only the director of one of the units, but also the film's producer, creative source and organizer.

At first, Du Qifeng thought about making another movie with film: "In 2010, when we started to make movies without film, I felt a little pity. Because of the existence of film and the existence of film, There are only our group of directors. I think, should we pay tribute to the film?" In 2007, John To, Lin Lingdong and Tsui Hark co-produced an "Iron Triangle", he always hoped You can do something similar again, "So I thought, I can find a group of directors and shoot again on film, maybe the last time."

As for what to shoot, To Qifeng quickly decided: to shoot Hong Kong.

From the 1950s to 2020, ten years are used as an era, and each director draws lots to choose the era he wants to shoot.

"From the time I was born to the present, I have always liked Hong Kong. I feel very lucky to draw this time in 2000, because I have a deep memory of what happened at that time and it is easier to write. But I don't mind drawing to any era, every time Every year I have some different opinions of my own in it.”

Many people know that the film was originally called "Eight and a Half".

In addition to the current seven directors, John Woo originally also participated, but unfortunately withdrew due to physical reasons.

To Qifeng said that at the beginning, there was no set how many people to invite, nor how many directors would participate.

Interestingly, among the seven directors participating today, Xu Anhua, Tsui Hark, and Tan Jiaming are the leaders of the new wave in Hong Kong, Sammo Hung and Yuan Heping are the representatives of kung fu films, and Johnnie To and Lin Lingdong are the leaders of genre films, which just reflects The three most well-known aspects of Hong Kong cinema.

The distinctive styles of the seven directors make this film an index for audiences to understand Hong Kong cinema.

Among the seven units, "Lost" by Lin Lingdong is quite special.

He almost completely abandoned the violent realism style he was good at, and turned to a tender father-son story.

As a friend and colleague, To Qifeng appreciates "Lost", and therefore regrets Lin Lingdong's death even more: "We have known each other since 1972, and it is rare to see him filming the type of "Lost", I think it is him One of the most artistic films I've ever made. I'm actually very excited to see him making films from a different perspective. It's a pity that this is his last work. If he hadn't died, I believe his next film will be very special "His wife said he had written a new script before, but unfortunately it hasn't finished yet."

There is no need to learn from us, the times will give young directors inspiration and direction

In Du Qifeng's view, Hong Kong filmmakers have their own characteristics as individuals, but "unity" can be regarded as a common character.

Another reason for filming "The Band of Seven" was to reflect the spirit of team unity, thereby inspiring the new generation of filmmakers.

Although one of the main themes of "The Band of Seven" is to miss film, To Qifeng does not comment on whether film or digital is good or bad, "Each era will have different situations. Our era is expressed in film, and now it is Digital expression. Different people and generations need to think about how to use different tools to express. The younger generation of directors should embrace their era, and each era has its own responsibilities. I think there have been many good new directors in the past ten years. , they don’t need to learn from our older generation, they have their own way of expression and tools, and the times will give them inspiration and direction. As an older generation, it is enough to support them.”

For many young directors, they may be facing this question at the moment: When the film market is in a downturn, what is the point of sticking to making films?

To Qifeng believes that since he is engaged in this profession, every director must love movies.

No matter how the surrounding environment changes, people who love it will definitely work hard to engage in this cause.

"I saw that Director Xu Anhua had also talked about this issue before, and a reporter asked her why she still made movies when she was in her 70s. As a film creator, there will definitely be times when your thinking will dry up, but before it is exhausted, if you have thoughts To express the story, it will definitely continue to shoot.”

As for Du Qifeng himself, he admitted that he will continue to shoot, but it will slow down.

"I'm 67 years old now. Many times I want to go faster, but my thinking may not catch up. I know this situation will definitely occur, but this is not a problem. Fast and slow is no longer something I will consider. If If I have a lot of inspiration, I will shoot faster and more; if I need to settle down, I will calm down." He revealed that he hopes to start shooting his new work this year: "I will definitely plan my director's work, but I don't know when to shoot. I don’t know when the filming will start, I hope it can be done within this year. As long as I can, I will definitely continue filming.”
