One person has died and four others remain admitted to the

San Pedro de Alcántara Hospital in Cáceres

, all of them with previous pathologies of a respiratory or hematological nature, after testing positive as carriers of

legionella

.

In fact, the cause of death of this person is still being analyzed in order to determine if it is due to having developed legionellosis disease or due to complications derived from the respiratory cancer that he already had, explained this Tuesday at a press conference the counselor of Health,

José María Vergeles

.

Likewise, two other people infected by

legionella

have already been discharged from the aforementioned hospital.

Therefore, the number of cases of

legionella

contagion is

seven

, all of them in the urban area of San Jorge, in the city of

Cáceres

, and with the temporary space between August 2 and 4.

Vergeles

has ruled out that these seven cases are grouped as an outbreak,

since there is no defined and clear common link of the origin of the contagion, except that they are people who work or reside in the aforementioned urban area.

The counselor explained that the

legionella

bacterium , which grows at temperatures above 35 degrees and in places where there is stagnant water, has many serotypes.

Many of them generate contagion in humans, but do not develop the disease and "only some do cause the disease in humans."

Following the protocol, Public Health

has tracked more than fifteen points

in the aforementioned area that include cooling towers, water distribution network and ornamental fountains.

The results of the specific strain take between ten and fifteen days

, for which reason a rapid test has been carried out preventively at these points, which have been positive for legionella in some of them, "without this meaning that the present strain is the cause of disease in humans".

Given the data and pending the final results, the Rodeo Park fountain has been closed - the analyzes have already been positive - and the public drinking water fountains of Colón and San Francisco de

Cáceres

as a preventive measure .

In addition, cleaning work will be undertaken.

In this sense, the Board has clarified that drinking water in the city of

Cáceres

is not compromised .
