Wakayama Prefecture announced on the 8th that 1,686 new people were confirmed to be infected with the new coronavirus.
It was 847 more than the same day of the week the previous week, making it the highest number of confirmed cases reported in a single day so far.
A total of 77,778 people were confirmed to be infected in the prefecture.
Seven deaths were also announced, bringing the death toll to 154.
The number of severely ill people has decreased by three from the 7th to four.
