Without turning on the air conditioner

It's time to ventilate the rooms and "roll the carpets"

Rooms should be well ventilated in the evening to get rid of any heat stored inside.

As temperatures rise to record levels in many places around the world, there are many ways to keep your home cool and create a pleasant climate in rooms during hot summer days.

At the forefront of these methods is the ventilation of the rooms well, to get rid of any heat preserved inside them, especially on hot days.

Kristian Handwerk, an official at a German consumer consultancy, recommends opening many windows in a home or apartment for a longer period of time, to allow air to circulate.

But what about during the day when one tends to leave the windows of the house wide open in the hope of enjoying the gentle breeze?

Although the air may seem gentle on the skin, the room will heat up quickly, as the heat begins to seep into the room through open windows, heating everything inside from the floor to the furniture, Handwerk says.

"It is better to keep the windows closed during the day, although it is difficult," he adds.

This doesn't mean they can't be opened every now and then to let in a little fresh air, but it should be for short periods.

Carpet is different from tile or wood, says Handwerk, because it acts as an insulating material.

He adds: "Thick carpet separates the hardwood floors from the rest of the room, and this means that when there is ventilation, the cold air does not reach the floor, which leads to the accumulation of heat in it."

"So it's time to roll up the carpet and store it away when the temperatures outside are high," says the expert.
