Three people were killed and six others injured in a knife attack at a kindergarten in southeast China on Wednesday.

A "gangster with a cap and a mask" stormed into the privately run kindergarten in Anfu district, local police said on China's short message service Weibo.

No information was initially given about the age of the victims.

A video released by the state-run newspaper Beijing Daily showed a police officer carrying a small child to an ambulance.

The alleged 48-year-old attacker was initially on the run.

The security authorities would do "everything to catch the suspect," the police assured.

In China, civilian possession of firearms is strictly prohibited.

However, knife attacks are not uncommon in the People's Republic.

In April last year, a man killed two children and injured 16 others with a knife in a kindergarten in southern China.

In June 2021, a man with a knife killed six people and injured 14 others on a shopping street in the east Chinese city of Anqing.

In 2018, a man was sentenced to death for stabbing nine children and injuring 11 others in northern China.
