The four Latin American countries formalized, Tuesday, August 2, 2022, their joint candidacy for the organization of the 2030 World Cup which will mark the centenary of the competition.

A candidacy that would mainly revolve around Uruguay, which had organized the very first competition of its kind in 1930.

“It is not the project of a government but the dream of a continent”

, said the president of Conmebol, Alejandro Dominguez, yesterday (August 2, 2022) during the press conference, surrounded by the heads of the federations of the four countries.

The details of the project for this unique candidacy have not been revealed and will be presented in May 2023 to FIFA, which must designate the host country(ies) in 2024. With this increase to 48 teams from 2026, it is more difficult and costly for a country to be a candidate alone.

With 16 more teams, that will make a total of 80 matches to be organized in a month.

The four candidate countries now have two years to campaign.

This could be the sixth edition of the World Cup disputed in South America, after those of 1930 (Uruguay), 1950 (Brazil), 1962 (Chile), 1978 (Argentina) and 2014 (Brazil).

Haiti: life without power

Guaranteeing public electricity 24 hours a day: utopia has been promised by many Haitian politicians, including former Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, or more recently former President Jovenel Moïse.

But the company EDH was never able to materialize this dream.

These days, the luckiest parts of the capital get at best a few hours of power each day.

In the provinces, some towns have not received a minute of public electricity for months.

Insecurity has been a major factor in this crisis and soaring fuel prices due to the war in Ukraine have amplified the difficulties.

The management of the company deplores the situation and today is careful not to make populist promises that it knows are perfectly untenable.

United States: Kansas guarantees the right to abortion

Voters in Kansas, in the U.S. Midwest, voted Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2022, to uphold the constitutional abortion guarantee, in the first major abortion ballot since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the federal right to abortion.

They rejected an amendment that would have removed text guaranteeing the right to abortion in the state Constitution, and could have paved the way for stricter regulation or a ban.

This election was seen as a political test at the national level, many conservative states having already banned or intending to quickly ban any right to abortion.

The result in Kansas means that abortion will remain legal until 22 weeks of pregnancy.

Parental authorization is required for minors.
