News from our newspaper (Reporter Jiang Ruojing) Recently, on the north side of Yongdingmen, the starting point of the central axis, after a period of renovation and upgrading, the Beijing Central Axis Green Space Landscape Improvement (Dongcheng Section) project was officially unveiled and fully opened to residents.

The project is located near the south central axis, including around the west gate of Tiantan Park and along Yongdingmenwai Street. It is an important node for environmental improvement at the southern end of the central axis, with a total area of about 2.7 hectares.

The project was officially launched in September 2021 and completed by the end of June this year.

The improved green space environment is very pleasant, attracting many residents from near and far to come to rest and exercise.

According to Chu Yuhong, deputy director of the Landscaping Bureau of Dongcheng District, the project highlights three major highlights.

The project completed the laying of the 67-meter Royal Road on the north side of Yongdingmen Regional Park through traffic guidance and land replacement. Except for the traffic intersection, the entire line of the South Central Axis Royal Road was completed.

The Beijing Youth Daily reporter saw at the scene that the total width of the paved imperial road is 6.14 meters. The center is a blue and white stone with a length of 1.65 meters and a width of 1.5 meters. Some imperial roads are connected; the large-scale Chinese locust on both sides of the imperial road sets off the spatial landscape sequence of the central axis, forming a transparent green viewing gallery between Zhengyang Gate and Yongding Gate on the south central axis.

Standing on this imperial road, you can see the Yongding Gate tower to the south, and the front gate to the north.

Dongcheng District has improved the landscape of the green space on the north and south sides of the west gate of Tiantan Park and the green space along Yongdingmenwai Street, and also improved the surrounding environment quality of the central axis.

Chu Yuhong said that the project adheres to the principle of "organic renewal, rejuvenation and empowerment", making full use of the original site conditions to build an open outdoor recreation space.

For example, the existing big trees are preserved, local tree species are replanted, and the regional greening landscape is optimized; the original stone pavement and characteristic stone moiré pavement in the site are used to update the damaged road; garden facilities such as metal galleries are repaired, and the remaining stone seats are polished and refurbished. And so on, endow the landscape space with historical and cultural heritage.

Taking advantage of the opportunity of this upgrade, the traffic flow outside the west gate of the Temple of Heaven has also been fully diverted and optimized.

Chu Yuhong said that during the construction, objectively analyze the activities and behaviors of people passing by, and reasonably arrange green public spaces between the subway entrances and exits and the park gate area.

In view of the current situation of the mixed traffic of motor vehicles and non-motor vehicles outside the west gate of Tiantan Park, motor vehicles have been adjusted to drive in one-way circulation on the south side of the west gate of Tiantan Park. Safety hazards are eliminated.

After the completion of the project, it has played a positive role in helping the Central Axis to apply for the World Heritage List and improving the quality of the surrounding environment of the South Central Axis. It also provides a good place for citizens to appreciate the style of the ancient capital and feel the charm of the Central Axis.

It is reported that in the future, Dongcheng District will continue to strengthen the spatial order of the central axis, and will focus on the promotion of the central axis application and the evacuation, protection and repair, display and utilization of cultural relics that affect the central axis’s style and landscape in the old city, and the renovation and darning of the interface along the line. The planned green space construction in the axis heritage area and the adjacent areas, with green as the base, continues the overall style of the central axis that is gentle and open, magnificent and orderly, blends ancient and modern, and is solemn.
