This interactive map lets you know the origin of celebrities

Topi Tjukanov, geographer and map designer at Mapbox, has just created a new kind of interactive map.

It allows you to discover the origin of "notable people" around the world and at the same time to know which celebrities are from your city, reports

But beware, only certain categories of people are listed on this map.

Four categories were defined by the designer: culture, science and discovery, sport as well as games and “leadership”.

Several criteria

The objective of this study was precisely to measure the notability of a person.

Several criteria were taken into account: The number of Wikipedia editions for each individual;

the length of the pages, i.e. the total of words found in all the biographies;

the average number of views on each person's biographies, between 2015 and 2018, in all available language editions;

the number of non-missing items retrieved from Wikipedia or Wikidata for date of birth, gender and area of ​​influence;

and finally the total number of external links from Wikidata.

On the map, the most notable personalities are displayed in large characters.

By zooming in, it is possible to discover more and more names.

A menu also allows you to sort the results according to certain criteria.

It is, moreover, possible to display the name of the cities rather than that of the personalities, to better navigate there.
