Egypt: A draft law imprisons the husband for 3 years if he sells his wife's gold!

A member of the Egyptian House of Representatives has prepared a new draft law to be submitted to the House, to imprison a husband who sells his wife's gold without her consent.

According to the Egyptian newspaper, "Parliamentary", Representative Mahmoud Essam is preparing a new draft law that he will submit to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, regarding the protection of the rights of both spouses regarding the list items of movables and gold, and the organization of their recovery in cases of divorce and dissolution.

Representative Essam explained that the aim of the law is to organize the issue of the list of marital movables in a balanced manner between the two parties to the relationship and give each of them their rights, stressing that the list is a woman’s right imposed by Sharia on the man and making it an integral part of the dowry.

Essam pointed out that the project requires the documentation of a list of marital movables in the interest of the real estate registry, similar to the notified contract, and the inclusion of all the processing of movables done by the husband as part of the dowry, as well as the inclusion of all the processing of movables done by the wife at her own expense.

Representative Essam stressed that the draft law includes emphasizing that the one who uses gold ornaments is the wife, not the husband, and that robbing a man of his wife’s possession of gold is a crime of theft and not betrayal of trust, which is punishable by three years in prison.
