Cantonese Opera is the symbol and cultural carrier of Lingnan culture. It has more than 500 years of development and a solid mass base. It is known as the "Southern Red Bean" and is the largest local opera in Guangdong Province.
On May 20, 2006, Cantonese opera was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list.
On September 30, 2009, Cantonese opera was included in the "List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" by UNESCO.

On June 25, 2009, Guangzhou Cantonese Opera House, which was formed by Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Troupe and Guangzhou Hongdou Cantonese Opera Troupe, was officially established.
Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Troupe was re-established in June 2001 on the basis of the original Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Troupe No. 1 after adjustment and enrichment of a group of young and middle-aged artistic backbones. It has created and performed many excellent plays "The Legend of the White Snake", "Daughter Fragrance", "Prince Rui and Zhuang" "The Concubine", "Fan Li Xishi", "Fate of Earth", "Flower Moon Shadow", "Three Lanes", "Diaolou", "Mandarin Duck Sword", "Han Gaozu Liu Bang", "Hua Jian Ji", "Thirteen Lines", "Qingshui River" and so on.
Guangzhou Hongdou Cantonese Opera Troupe was founded in 1990 by the famous Cantonese opera master Hongxiannu. It undertakes the important task of inheriting and developing the arts of Ma Shizeng and Hongxiannu. It has rehearsed a number of representative plays of Ma Shizeng and Hongxiannu, Guan Hanqing and The Unruly Princess. He also created and rehearsed "Wedding on the Execution Ground", "Nanyue Palace Ci", "Sun Yat-sen and Soong Ching Ling", "Huang Feihu's Anti-Five Passes", "The Return of the Red", "Lingnan Family", "Original Heart", "Liang Qichao", etc. " and other excellent new screenplays.

At present, Guangzhou Cantonese Opera House is a state-owned cultural troupe directly under the Guangzhou Cultural and Tourism System. It integrates Cantonese opera performance, literary and artistic creation, theatre management and art training.
The theater currently has high-level Cantonese opera performers such as "Second Mei" and Shanghai "Magnolia" Award winner Ou Kaiming, winners of China Drama Plum Blossom Award, Li Junsheng, Chen Yunhong, Cui Yumei, Su Chunmei, Wu Feifan, etc. Appropriate talents for performing, performing, composing, choreography, costumes, etc.
The new site of Guangzhou Cantonese Opera House is located on the northwest side of the intersection of Machang Road and Haian Road, Tianhe District, Guangzhou City, on the northeast side of Zhujiang New Town, on the west side of the Racecourse, and adjacent to the Red Line Art Center in the west. It is planned to be relocated in 2022.
