The summer vacation is not over yet, and the Israeli education community is already worrying about the possibility of a "teacher shortage" when the school starts.

The Israeli Ministry of Education said recently that there are expected to be 5,600 vacancies for teachers across the country in the new school year, most of them in key subjects such as mathematics, science and English.

According to the Times of Israel, "classrooms are too crowded" and "salaries are too low" are important reasons why the education sector cannot retain teachers.

According to the report, Israel's "classroom crowding" is much higher than the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) average, while the average teacher salary is much lower than the organization's average.

According to data from the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics, the average monthly salary of Israeli teachers in 2019 was NIS 12,000 (about 23,758 yuan).

According to Haaretz, the actual monthly salary of new teachers is only NIS 5,600 (about RMB 11,089), which is basically the same as the minimum wage in Israel.
