A Yemeni Sufi preacher and scholar, born in Abyan Governorate and worked as a teacher in his country, then immigrated to Saudi Arabia and spent 12 years as a preacher and imam in the mosques of Jeddah, before returning to Yemen, and in his last days he traveled to Jordan for treatment and died there.

He is Abu Bakr bin Ali, the famous Al-Adani. He belongs to the Ba’alawi family from Hadramawt in eastern Yemen, known for its resistance to British colonialism.

He is one of the most prominent leaders of the Sufi movement in Yemen, and his official website says about him that his lineage ends with Al-Hussein bin Ali bin Abi Talib, may God be pleased with them.

Birth and upbringing

The famous Abu Bakr bin Ali was born in the city of Ahwar in the Abyan Governorate (southern Yemen) in the year (1947 AD - 1366 AH) in a family that inherited knowledge from father to grandfather.

He spent his childhood in the cities of Ahwar and Al-Mahfad, and received his initial education at the hands of his father, the scholar and preacher, Ali bin Abi Bakr bin Alawi, the famous, who was the Mufti of the city of Ahwar. He also studied with many of the sheikhs of his city and other Yemeni cities.

Study and scientific training

The famous Abu Bakr studied primary school in the cities of Ahwar and Al-Mahfad, and completed his secondary education in the city of Aden.

He memorized the Qur’an at the hands of his father, and learned some legal and linguistic sciences from him at the Al-Mamouna School in the town of Ahwar.

He also studied in Sharia sciences with a group of scholars in Ahwar, Aden and Hadhramaut.

He moved in seeking knowledge between Ahwar, Tarim and Aden, and took from their sheikhs, most notably Sheikh Muhammad bin Salem Al-Bayhani.

In his education, he combined the traditional, which depends on direct and oral reception from the sheikhs, and the contemporary academic education, as he graduated from the Department of Arabic Language at the College of Education at the University of Aden, from which he also obtained a doctorate in jurisprudence.

Advocacy and practical experience

The famous Abu Bakr worked as a teacher since his youth. He taught in the “Al-Maimuna School” in Ahwar, and then in some secondary schools in Aden after graduating from the university.

He moved in his work between several regions, including Ahwar, Al-Mahfad and Aden, and he was a teacher at the Teachers Preparation Institute.

He immigrated to Saudi Arabia in 1980-1400 AH, and there he studied again at the hands of scholars, most notably Abdul Qadir bin Ahmed Al-Saqqaf, Muhammad Alawi Al-Maliki, and Muhammad bin Ahmed Al-Shatry, and practiced the imamate and rhetoric in the mosques of the city of Jeddah.

After 12 years in Saudi Arabia, he returned to Yemen when the union between the two parts of the country (south and north) was declared in the early 1990s, and devoted himself to preaching, preaching and guidance.

He established dozens of educational educational institutes under the name of “Islamic Education Bonds,” which are sites to which university students and basic and secondary schools are sheltered, and where they are provided with housing and food with the contribution of many volunteers and donors.

The famous Abu Bakr Ali also founded some studies and research centers throughout Yemen, and he had many trips to Egypt, the Levant, Jordan, Sri Lanka and other countries, and he took from many of its scholars.

He founded Al-Wasatiyah Sharia University for Islamic Sciences and Humanities, which began its work in 2016 in Hadhramaut.

He worked on some advocacy and special scientific projects, calling them such as “The Jurisprudence of Transformations,” “The Sunnah of Attitudes” and “The Sunnah of Significance.” His supporters consider them a welcome addition to the science of advocacy jurisprudence.

Books and Achievements

He has written in several fields, and he is also known to have practiced drawing and plastic art, and wrote on thought, education, advocacy jurisprudence, history, translations, biographies, jurisprudence and literature. Among his books are:

  • He wrote stories and novels, including: The City of Al-Faharir, Exiting the Red Circle, Carving on the Wall of Memories.

  • Among his books on history: The Ahwar Party in the History of Mikhlaf Ahwar.

Death

He died on Wednesday 27 July 2022 in a hospital in the Jordanian capital (Amman), after a trip to treat a terminal illness.
