  • Nature On the trail of the brown bear in the most beautiful landscapes of Asturias

Oxygenate the body, clear the mind, flee from heat waves... León is nature in its purest form.

A little explored corner of our geography that adds up to seven Biosphere reserves.

These are five proposals to live a summer in green.

The Arguellos

The action of the water has created here some of the most renowned gorges in the province, such as those of Vegacervera and Valdeteja, as well as an underground complex that has its greatest exponent in the Valporquero cave, a true underground geological work of art.

It is also worth admiring the Llamazares cave, with a 1 km hiking path -from the reception to the entrance of the cave- and an interior route of 700 meters.

In this Biosphere Reserve, one of the most recommended routes is from

Matallana de Torío to Vegacervera,

crossing the calcareous massif and accessing the ports of the Cantabrian mountain range with its forests and pastures.

The sickles of Vegacervera.

Upper Bernesga Reserve

The Bernesga river articulates this reserve made up of the municipalities of La Pola de Gordón and Villamanín, valleys of the central Leonese mountain, with beech and holm oak forests.

For hikers, the Pico Fontañán Route

is especially recommended

, which preserves the remains of trenches and an anti-aircraft bunker from the Spanish Civil War at its peak, signposted from La Pola de Gordón;

the Faedo de Ciñera, a spectacular beech forest;

and the sickles of Villar.

The Collegiate Church of Santa María de Arbas.

Before crossing the famous port of Pajares, which delimits León and Asturias, with its spectacular views, you must stop at the

Collegiate Church of Santa María de Arbas del Puerto

, right at its foot, declared a National Monument in 1931 and one of the most representative examples of Leonese rural Romanesque.

The valleys of Omaña and Luna

It covers a wide territory that marks the transition between the peaks of the Cantabrian Mountains, with a clear Atlantic influence, and the southern moors, with a Mediterranean character.

The Omaña and Luna rivers form the backbone of the territory before joining their waters to form the Órbigo.

Omana Valley.

In the Omaña Valley we can choose the Route from La Magdalena to Las Omañas, which allows us to admire one

of the most beautiful valleys

in northwestern Leon and the one that best preserves its traditional flavor, with places such as Riello, the hermitage of Pandorado and El Castillo .

Also noteworthy is the circular section through the birch groves of

Murias de Paredes

, one of the largest in Spain.

And in the Valle de Luna, the Route from Los Barrios de Luna to Riolago de Babia, through which you can discover the juniper grove of Mirantes de Luna, the westernmost in all of Europe and an authentic relic of a forest more typical of other latitudes.

The region of Babia

It brings together the municipalities of Cabrillanes and San Emiliano and stands out for its

high peaks

, wide pastures and the Ubiña massif, one of the highest calcareous levels in the Cantabrian Leonesa.

Babia is also known by a very popular expression -'being in Babia' -synonymous with distracted and absent;

such was the feeling of disconnection of royalty and upper classes who came there as a place of rest.

At a heritage level, it treasures one of the most impressive Leonese rural complexes: the Historic-Artistic Complex of

Riolago de Babia

, with its emblazoned houses displaying coats of arms, palaces and also traditional houses built of stone.

A land of transhumant shepherds with another legend: that of Babieca, the Cid's horse, was originally from these mountains.

Laciana Valley

The westernmost of the Leonese Cantabrian valleys.

A mountainous territory drained by the

river Sil

, which rushes energetically towards El Bierzo, and with an important coal basin, Villablino.

Precisely the Route from Villablino to La Cuneta is the one that best combines all the essence of the valley.

The Capercaillie Interpretation Center.

It is a must to visit the

Capercaillie Interpretation Center

, in Caboalles de Arriba, to discover this emblematic species of bird and also traditional life, with special attention to the Brañas, where the cattle take advantage of the late port pastures in the summer. .

In Sosas de Laciana there is a hydraulic dairy where the milk obtained precisely in its pastures was transformed into butter.
