Researchers: Follow up on new strains of corona through sanitation

A team of researchers in Austria has found that it is possible to track new strains of the emerging corona virus by analyzing wastewater.

As part of the study reported in the scientific journal Nature Biology, a research team in the health sector in Austria concluded that these results come after two years of research and the withdrawal of sewage samples from sites across the country.

The website "Medical Express" that specializes in medical research stated that researchers analyzed wastewater samples that they collected from treatment plants across the country in order to discover the presence of any new strains of the virus.

The samples that the researchers pulled included 59% of the population in Austria, and the study team compared their findings with the statistics announced by health officials in the country regarding positive cases of the disease and the different strains that are discovered.

The researchers confirmed that there is almost a match between the results announced by the health departments in the country, and the results obtained through sewage samples.

They explained that the strain most prevalent in Austria shifted from Delta to Omicron.

The study team believes that wastewater analysis is a good way to monitor the spread of any viral disease among a particular population, because it allows knowing the extent of the disease's spread.
