"Breaking the waves" is the story of the oil worker Jan and the religious girl Bess who fall in love with each other.

But when Jan is paralyzed in an accident, the relationship turns to tragedy and he urges Bess to take a new lover and then tell him the details in his sickbed.

Now "Breaking the waves" gets new life on the opera stage in Vadstena castle.

And to depict the story's many intimate and sex scenes, the opera house enlisted the help of intimacy coordinator Malin Erikson.

- There are very intimate scenes in it, everything from where there is pleasure and everything is wonderful to pure abuse, says Malin Erikson and continues:

- It is clear that it can be more challenging in a violent scene, but we always work from the singers, which means that we build the scene with a choreography.

First opera to coordinate intimacy

Intimacy coordinators have become increasingly common in the film and television industry.

For example, the hit series "Normal people" was noted for its well-directed sex scenes and its sexual tension.

But also Swedish series such as "Snabba cash" and "Knutby" have used intimacy coordinators.

Erikson was the first intimacy coordinator in Sweden and says that the role took hold in the industry in 2017. "Breaking the waves" will now be the first opera to call on external help.

- The role is quite new, so I think that sometimes it must take some time.

Now I hope we see more opera houses welcoming this role.
