Japan announces first case of monkeypox
On Monday, the Japanese Ministry of Health confirmed the first case of monkeypox in Japan.
Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) reported that the case had been detected in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
The World Health Organization announced yesterday, Saturday, that the outbreak of monkeypox in more than one country constitutes an "emergency of international concern."
The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced at a press conference in Geneva the highest level of alert that can be imposed in the event of a health threat.
The classification aims to encourage the governments of member states to take measures to contain the outbreak of the disease, as well as to educate doctors and clinics to take protective measures when there are suspected cases, and to educate the population on how to protect themselves from infection.
