Sources: The World Health Organization is divided over declaring a state of emergency to confront monkeypox

Two well-informed sources told Reuters that a state of division prevails among members of a team of experts of the World Health Organization over whether the outbreak of monkeypox represents a global health emergency, however, the Director-General of the Organization may decide the matter tomorrow, Sunday, by declaring the emergency, which constitutes the highest level of alert for the organization. .

The committee, which met on Thursday, is responsible for advising Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who has the final say in declaring a global health emergency.

In the past, Tedros has always followed the committee's recommendations, but the two sources familiar with the decision-making process, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he was seriously considering declaring a state of emergency despite the lack of a majority in favor of either option because of his sense of urgency to tackle the disease.

The World Health Organization is scheduled to hold a press conference at 1300 GMT on Saturday to announce its final decision.
