On the occasion of the Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade in Berlin, the Bundestag hoisted the rainbow flag for the first time: one flag waved on the Reichstag building on Saturday and two others in front of it.

Parliament is thus showing "the flag for tolerance and diversity," said Bundestag President Bärbel Bas in a video message.

This makes it clear to everyone that "gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transsexuals and intersexuals are a valuable part of our country".

Federal ministries also showed the rainbow flag.

Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) wrote on Twitter about the action in front of her house that she wished all participants "a happy, safe and colorful" Christopher Street Day.

The rainbow flag also waved in front of the Federal Ministry of Defense.

Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) wrote on Twitter: "We stand for an open and diverse Bundeswehr."

According to the organizers, 500,000 people have registered for the Christopher Street Day parade from noon.

It starts near Potsdamer Platz and is supposed to end after more than seven kilometers in front of the Brandenburg Gate.

Christopher Street Day commemorates events in the United States in the late 1960s.

On June 28, 1969, police stormed the Stonewall Inn gay bar on New York's Christopher Street.

Days of heavy clashes between activists and security forces followed.

The uprising is considered the birth of the modern gay and lesbian movement.
