Traveling to the Hautes-Pyrénées on Thursday during the Tour de France, Emmanuel Macron took the opportunity to meet the breeders.

The latter told him of their concerns about the presence of wolves, whose first attacks have been recorded recently.

This has led to the deployment since the beginning of the week in the Hautacam sector of the “wolf” mobile intervention brigade from Gap.

During his meeting with the breeders, the President of the Republic assured that a similar "wolf intervention brigade" would be created by the summer of 2023. It will cover the Pyrenees sector and the south of the Massif Central, where the number of gray wolves is increasing.

The Head of State has also committed to measures to protect the herds, whether nets, the presence of shepherds and patous dogs at night.

These wolf attacks “cause immense damage to our herds and our way of working.

They jeopardize the balance of our livelihood,” explained Etienne Lay, breeder and elected official in Campans, after the meeting.

In France, the presence of the gray wolf has been growing for ten years and according to the French Office for Biodiversity, its population is estimated at between 826 and 1,016 individuals.
