China News Agency, Luoyang, July 21 (Kan Li) The water seepage control and dangerous rock mass reinforcement and protection project of Fengxian Temple in Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang was officially completed on the 21st, and the scaffolding built due to the "overhaul" began to be dismantled.

  The Longmen Grottoes, which were first carved during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty, flourished in the Tang Dynasty, and are the treasure house of stone carving art with the most statues and the largest scale in the world.

In December 2021, the large-scale protection project of Fengxian Temple in Longmen Grottoes was officially launched, and the project built a scaffolding of 6,900 square meters.

  It is reported that the focus of the project mainly includes water seepage control and reinforcement of dangerous rock mass.

That is, according to the geological conditions of Fengxian Temple, the distribution of fissures, the degree of development of seepage water diseases and other factors, the west wall, south wall, north wall and surrounding areas of Fengxian Temple shall be treated; measures to improve the stability of the rock mass.

  Shi Jiazhen, director of the Longmen Grottoes Research Institute, introduced the main contents of the completion of the project, saying that the micro-cracks in the Fengxian Temple area were 2806 square meters of grouting, the ancient drainage ditch was repaired 106 m, the drainage ditch 89.4 m was built, the drip eaves were added 62 m, and the water pressure test was carried out. 12 drilling holes were drilled, 68 large dangerous rock masses were reinforced, 1107 square meters of fractured rock masses were bonded, 600 square meters of passive protection nets and 2970 square meters of active protection nets were installed.

  On the 19th, the "overhaul" passed the preliminary acceptance of the completion organized by the Luoyang Municipal Bureau of Cultural Relics.

  Shi Jiazhen told reporters that during the implementation of the project, the Longmen Grottoes Research Institute joined a number of colleges and research institutes to form a scientific research team, and carried out a detailed and comprehensive disease investigation and assessment and scientific and technological archaeological work on Fengxian Temple.

  During this period, the scientific research team used a variety of high-tech means to investigate and evaluate the disease of the Fengxian Temple group sculptures, which provided basic data for grasping the degree of disease development and analysis of its causes.

  At the same time, through investigation, detection and analysis, a number of new discoveries have been made, including gold and silver elements and glass eyeballs on the surface of statues such as the Lusena Buddha.
