The Coronation of Poppea

, composed in 1642 by the Italian Claudio Monteverdi, is the first opera on a historical subject.

This colorful fresco reappears in a new production at the Festival lyrique d'Aix-en-Provence under the baton of Leonardo Garcia Alarcon with his ensemble on period instruments, Cappella Mediterranea.

The Coronation of Poppea

recounts the adulterous loves of the Emperor Nero and the ambitious Poppea who literally pass over corpses to find themselves united in the sacred bonds of marriage.

The staging is by the American Ted Huffman.

The Coronation of Poppea

can be seen at the Théâtre du Jeu de Paume in Aix-en-Provence until July 23.
