On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the disappearance of Serge Gainsbourg, Europe 1 devotes a special day to the author, composer and performer.

Dani, for whom he wrote "Like a Boomerang", was the guest of "Music!" on Tuesday.

The singer tells the tumultuous story of this song, written in 1975, released in 2001, and a version of which remains secret.

INTERVIEW

26 years.

This is the time it took between the writing of the song

Comme un boomerang

by Serge Gainsbourg for Dani in 1975, and its release in 2001 in a version sung in duet with Étienne Daho.

The singer was the guest on Tuesday of

Music!

, as part of the Serge Gainsbourg special day in Europe 1, 30 years after the death of the singer.

Dani comes back to the crazy story of this song and explains where his version of

Like a boomerang

in duet Serge Gainsbourg is.

Denied at Eurovision

After being prevented from singing for Eurovision in 1974, Dani agreed again the following year to represent France in the singing competition.

On one condition: "That I sing a song written by Serge Gainsbourg", she remembers today.

Serge Gainsbourg accepts.

He writes to her

Like a Boomerang

.

"We recorded it in the studio, we made the models together", explains Dani.

They propose the title.

But the Antenne 2 channel, which broadcasts Eurovision in France, refuses this song, whose lyrics it considers too dark "and too rebellious", in the words of its interpreter.

Faced with this refusal, Dani decides not to represent France.

We are in 1975,

Like a boomerang

is forgotten.

"This song sat on Vogue's shelves for years," says Dani.

Help from Etienne Daho

The song finally reappeared in 2001. "Étienne Daho, to whom I gave all my demos, found the song. He told me that I had to sing again and make this song", explains Dani.

That year, the famous version of

Comme un boomerang

was released in which Dani sang in duet with Étienne Daho.

A version of Gainsbourg alone was released in 2011, in a best-of album.

But another duet version of this song exists.

In 1975, during the first recordings, Dani and Serge Gainsbourg sang together.

This duo never came out, but it didn't disappear.

"I think it's Étienne Daho who has it, because I always give him my tapes," says Dani, who does not seem particularly in a hurry for this new version to be unveiled.

"These are the things of life," she comments.

It is therefore to Etienne Daho that the most assiduous fans of Serge Gainsbourg will have to contact, if they want to see one day this new version of

Comme un boomerang

come out on CD.
