More than 800 km of cumulative traffic jams were recorded on Saturday on the country's main roads used by holidaymakers, according to the Bison Futé website which had classified the day red in the direction of departures.

The traffic peak was reached shortly before noon with 818 km of cumulative traffic jams, against 623 km last weekend and more than 1,000 a year ago.

A7, A9 and A10, the infernal trio

The Rhône valley is the busiest as usual, with around 120 km of slowdowns on the A7 motorway alone between the south of Lyon and Orange (Vaucluse).

On the A9 in Languedoc towards Spain, motorists must wait for nearly 70 km.

The A10 which connects the Paris region to Bordeaux is also very congested, among the most affected axes.

Traffic is still expected to be heavy on Sunday in the return direction.
