At the festival, dance lessons are given during the day and in the evenings, lindy hop is danced at Folkets hus.

- The incredible support from all the world's swing dancers is fantastic with Herräng, says Daniel Heedman

Russian Angelika who lives in Copenhagen describes what she likes about lindy hop: that you can play and have fun and let go of your inner child.

- Here you can dance at any time of the day without anyone thinking you are weird, she says.

Comes from Harlem

In the area there are five large dance tents where lessons are given all day.

Visitors are mostly immigrants from other countries and of all ages.

Lindy hop originally came from Harlem in New York in the 1920s where it was danced by African Americans.

That Sweden could become the center of lindy hop is due to the fact that the founder Lennart Westerlund in the early 80's rediscovered the dance that was no longer performed anywhere.

Lennart Westerlund sought out some of the old dancers from Harlem, including Frankie Manning, and took him to Sweden as a dance teacher.

Herräng was a good place because the premises were cheap and they had access to Folkets hus.

The founder has resigned

But in recent months, there has been a discussion about cultural appropriation, as some considered that the festival in Herräng romanticized its origins in Harlem and was not politically aware enough.

The festival organizers have received criticism on social media and the tone has been harsh at times.

Something that led to the festival founder Lennart Westerlund resigning.

Organizer Daniel Hedman describes the past year as a different and partly exhausting time.

At the same time, they want to absorb the criticism.

- We have gone out the whole administration and said that now is the time to listen.

We try to open up as much as we can and think about how we can improve this.

If someone does not feel welcome, we want to fix it.

But we will not change the soul of the camp, to be like a mecca for lindy hop.
