Discover our new episode of "Mysteries from here", the secret series of the podcast "Summer in your ears" dedicated to extraordinary stories.

After the ghosts of the Louvre, let's go today to the high plateaus of the Ardèche, at the beginning of the 19th century.

The Peyrebeille inn, located on a desert plateau swept by the winds, would have been, for more than twenty years, the scene of around fifty murders and numerous thefts, committed by the tenants, Pierre and Marie Martin, and their employee, Jean Rochette.

A story whose secrets have not all been revealed, told today by Jean-Philippe Savignoni, guide-lecturer.

This "heritage storyteller" notably co -wrote

L'énigme de l'Auberge rouge, the true story of the Auberge de Peyrebeille

, published by Borée.

A confirmed death, dozens of others supposed

If the death of a client, that of the peasant Jean-Antoine Enjolras, is established, the rumor swells the words of the neighbors.

Perhaps 20, then 30, then 50 people were killed, according to neighbors.

After a trial in Privas (Ardèche) in June 1883, the Martin couple and their servant were sentenced to death.

Nearly 30,000 people make the trip in the fall to see the couple and their servant guillotined.

"At that time, crimes were expiated at the very place where they had been committed", explains, in its October 25, 1833 edition,

Le Mémorial de la Loire et de la Haute-Loire

.

The story of the Auberge Rouge was told in the cinema in 1951 by Claude Autant-Lara, then Gérard Krawczyk in 2007. And it still brings, today in Ardèche, tourists eager to thrill in the establishment.
