1.8 million dollars… This is the sum for which an unreleased version of

Blowin' in the Wind

, Bob Dylan's cult title, was sold at auction.

Two bidders apparently fought to the bitter end, according to

Variety

, which reports that this recording made last year went for a sum well above estimates: Christie's, which organized the sale, had appraised the item under $1.2 million.

The purchaser has not been identified, and of course, the few people who have been able to listen to this reissue of the 1962 classic have not said a word.

But according to Christie's, it is an exceptional object, the song having been engraved thanks to "such an important and revolutionary analog playback technology".

Optimal fidelity

This recording is indeed unique since in addition to being the first since 1962 of

Blowin' in the Wind

, it was produced with an innovative process, an acetate developed by producer T Bone Burnett.

The fidelity to the original sound is optimal, the publication states, in part because the disc benefits from a "coating which would make it almost impervious to normal wear and tear".

The name of this new format: Ionic Original.

Bob Dylan re-recorded

Blowin' in the Wind

with a live band, the singer from Los Angeles in the studio, while the rest of the artists were in Nashville.

It now remains to be seen whether the buyer will agree to share this music with the rest of the world.
