• Tested last year, the free TER, coaches and boats of the Breizhgo network are renewed for those under 26 this summer.

  • The Brittany region wishes to encourage young people to use public transport.

  • In a context of rising fuel prices, three million train users are expected this summer in Brittany.

It was a campaign promise from the man who was then a candidate for re-election as president of the Brittany region.

Hastily launched last year by Loïg Chesnais-Girard, free regional trains for those under 26 have been renewed for the summer season.

From July 9, all regional trains, coaches and even boats will be free provided you book your trip the day before at the latest.

A measure which had cost nearly 300,000 euros last year for its launch "hard" as recalled by the president of the region.

This year, the budget could be doubled or even tripled depending on train traffic.

For its first summer, the operation had been a modest success.

While 50,000 tickets were offered free of charge each week, the region had “only” recorded 100,000 trips in July and August.

“We are more structured, better prepared this year.

We communicated a lot on social networks.

We hope to at least double attendance, ”says the socialist.

In a context of soaring fuel prices, journeys by bus or train could multiply.

Behind its desire to "oxygenate" young Bretons, the region also hopes to retain its population.

“Public transport can be learned.

We have a notion of education so that young people get used to taking the train or the bus, ”says Loïg Chesnais-Girard.

Three million travelers expected

Faced with the very significant use of the train this summer, the SNCF claims to have mobilized all its equipment.

“We take out all the oars.

We have even rented some of them to other regions to strengthen ourselves, ”says Magali Euverte.

The TER regional director in Brittany knows that this summer will be intense on the rails, in particular because of the high price of fuel.

“We saw that people were booking in advance, that they were anticipating”.

Three million travelers are expected in the region.

The SNCF manager believes that free admission will gradually lead young people to the train.

“When you're free, you show that the train is easy, that it allows you to save money and that it frees up useful time”.

This summer will also be that of the redeployment of trains fitted out for bicycles.

Faced with a growing demand from cyclists to carry their equipment, the region has renewed the transformation of certain trains where seats are condemned for the carriage of bicycles.

Faced with the criticisms addressed last year, the community agreed to divide by three the price of the trip, charged one euro per bike.

A decision that visibly encouraged travelers to book.

At the end of June, 7,000 reservations had already been made, compared to 4,500 at the same time last year.
